Jhene Aiko is having the best year ever and don’t think it hasn’t been a long time coming (we totally remember her from her days as a B2K backup singer). With a hot single, ā€œI Don’t Need Youā€ blazing the radio, Jhene has created a buzz around herself based off of her vocals and songwriting skills. Oh and the help of Drake…The combination is enough for Vibe to dub her the modern-day Sade for millennials.

Jhene graces Vibe Magazine’s Summer issue with a few of her fellow rising artists: Mack Wilds and August Alsina (who are also gracing the Music Matters stage at the 2014 BET Experiences) where she opened up about her artistry.

ā€œI’ve never killed a guy, and I’ve never went to jail, but those are the things I have to get out of my head some way,ā€ she says. ā€œIt’s writing a song and then turning my crazy thoughts into those moments where I’m like, I could really do that, but I’m not going to.ā€

ā€œWhere am I gonna survive in a world of 2 Chainz and Drake? Frank, Miguel and all of these guys. I remember coming across them and being like, ā€˜Yo, bro, I got some music coming up.’ And they’re like, ā€˜Okay, cool, how’s that movie going?ā€™ā€ —Mack Wilds

ā€œJust because I’m a man with an acoustic guitar doesn’t mean I have to play love songs. I want to straddle all worlds at once. I want to do my acoustic stuff, write for the biggest pop acts in the world, and also work with all the rappers I like, underground or not.ā€ —Ed Sheeran

ā€œCrack fucking ruined my family. So to be selling that shit and seeing what it do to people, you start to realize, ā€˜Damn, my heart might be a little too big for this shit.ā€™ā€ —August Alsina
