Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated has experienced many firsts. They are the first intercollegiate fraternity founded by Black men, and some of its members were among the first to advance the cause of African Americans in various capacities. Now, the fraternity brings another first: The first Divine Nine organization with its own comic book.

According to a press release, Alpha Phi Alpha announced the release this week of Issue 1 of its groundbreaking series, The Men of Distinction, mixing the fraternity’s historic legacy with a fresh take on the superhero genre.

The series is described as a fictional reimagining of its college leadership. In the series, the fraternity’s five Regional Assistant Vice Presidents – Kendall “Brick” Harris, Damon “Promo” Hendricks, Simon “BlackWall Street” Patton, Roger “Perfectionist” Cummings, and Gerald “Oracle” Owens – receive powers inherited from the fraternity’s mystical lineage to fight super villians and advocate for the rights of college students of color.

The comic was written and edited by Jeremy Stokes and Kieth Harris, with illustrations by Curt Wilson and a cover by Baron Tosin. Contributors to the project include Sean L. McCaskill, Eric Christopher Webb, Donnell Thomas, and Tkebanx.T. Jahannes.
