A Pioneering Career
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1961, Angie Stone’s musical journey began with gospel music, influenced by her father’s quartet. She gained prominence as a member of the Sequence, one of the first female hip-hop groups, known for their 1979 hit “Funk You Up.” Transitioning to R&B, she later joined Vertical Hold before embarking on a successful solo career.Neo-Soul Contributions
Stone’s debut solo album, Black Diamond (1999), featured the hit single “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” which showcased her rich vocals and heartfelt lyrics. She continued to define the neo-soul genre with subsequent albums like “Mahogany Soul” (2001) and “Stone Love” (2004). Her collaborations with artists such as D’Angelo and Erykah Badu further were also major highlights in her prolific R&B career. Let’s not forget one of her greatest contributions being the legendary “Girlfriends” theme song. We honor Angie Stone for all of her wonderful contributions and long lasting impact she’s left on the entertainment world. Rest easy, Ms. Stone.Check out her top-charting neo-soul hits below:
